Man Who Left His Lecturing Job in Nigeria, Bags PhD in UK Varsity, UK School Employs Him Immediately.

The brilliant man started his tertiary education at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, South-West, Nigeria where he graduated with an outstanding academic record with a first-class degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.  In 2016, he proceeded to Covenant University also in South-West, Nigeria to earn a Master’s degree in the same course.

He was awarded the Overall Best Graduating Postgraduate Student. After his Master’s degree, Segun resigned from his Lecturing job at Covenant University, Nigeria, to move to the United Kingdom with his family after clinching a conditional scholarship to study at the Manchester Metropolitan University in England. Segun now works as a full-time lecturer at the University.

His wife, IniOluwa Afolabi described their journey as moving from the known to the unknown.  “Yesterday, my husband Segun Popoola  officially bagged his PhD at The Manchester Metropolitan University  Metropolitan University with the PhD thesis Title “Federated Deep Learning for Botnet Attack Detection in IoT Network“ “Indeed, it’s the Lord doing and it is marvellous in our sights.

Considering where we hailed from, we know it is a great privilege to have achieved this great feat, and to God alone we give all the praise! “I deliberately used “We” because we did this PhD together and this feat has impacted my life positively in different ways, particularly in getting direction for my career. My husband deserves the applaud for giving me this opportunity to learn with him on this great journey.

The journey was from the known to unknown, resigning his job to move into a new country with conditional scholarship offer was a faith journey and I’m glad today that he was bold enough to take that great step.

“I celebrate him today because as overwhelming as the journey was, he took time out to invest in my development, was patient with my growth process, provided all the necessary resources to refine and bring out the research potentials in me.

“Specifically, he taught me relevant skills such as writing emails, research article, machine learning among many others. At the start it was overwhelming for me, but now I looked back, smile and bless him because I (We) am (are) reaping the harvest of his investment in me. He has added great value to me…

“Today, I can say he is the one who made me have a name in Google scholar with few publications indexed in reputable journals. He taught me the essence of volunteering, collaboration, writing publications and provided objective internal review to all the articles and scholarship applications I’ve made.  “Research excites me, but I never know how to go about it, in his busy schedule he devoted time to raise me and nurture my potentials.

I’m grateful for this, thank you Coach! “One of his dream was to get me into one of the best Universities in the world, he did all he could to make sure I measure up to that standard and I am glad to say shortly before the end of his PhD, I got a prestigious scholarship into the one of the top Universities in the world (story to come later). I wouldn’t have made it without you. You deserve the credit! “Above all, you are available for our daughter.

I’m sure she is glad to have you as her Dad and she says Congratulations in her sweet tiny voice too! “I won’t forget to thank his supervisor Professor Bamidele Adebisi, he is an amazing person I’ve met on this journey and our brother Funso Popoola who has been of tremendous help and support all through.

“We are proud of you for this great feat and pray you greater achievements to come.  “Congratulations Dr. Segun Popoola, Our everyday HERO! Thanks for setting the pace, I’m coming up next!.”
